On Thursday, May 12, two people were killed in a five vehicle crash in Chelsea.
According to Alabama State Troopers, the accident happened just before 1 p.m. on U.S. 280 in front of Wal-Mart. A 2007 Toyota Corolla being driven by 81 year old John Vernon Alexander of Sterrett was hit by a 2010 Ford F-250 being driven by 68 year old Donald A. Hardin, of Bessemer.
Alexander died at the scene and his wife, 74 year old Carolyn Johnson was taken to UAB hospital where she later died.
Three other vehicles were involved in the crash which blocked both westbound lanes and one eastbound lane.
Hardin was not injured in the crash and neither was 43 year old Erica Lashun Scott, of Chelsea.
However, two other people were injured and paramedics took 65 year old Frederick Reid Tatum, of Birmingham, and 42 year old, Lizabeth Lee Crawford, of Harpersville, to an area hospital for treatment.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
