Crossing Accidents in Alabama

In Colbert County there have been five or six rail crossing accidents in the past 10 years and across the country around every three hours a person or a vehicle is hit at a railroad crossing by a train.

On Wednesday afternoon, April 12 a man from Cherokee was killed on Red Rock Road, west of Tuscumbia, when an eastbound freight train struck his vehicle. There are three main rail lines in the area and the trains go to Birmingham, Memphis and Chattanooga which means there are several crossings.

Now the Alabama Department of Transportation and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency are launching their Operation Lifesaver Railroad Safety campaign to try and improve driver awareness and safety at crossings. Several crossing arms and lights have been introduced but Alabama is still one of the top states in the nation for accidents at crossings with 90 collisions, five fatalities and 34 injuries in 2015 putting Alabama in sixth place for collisions and fourteenth for fatalities.
