On Thursday, September 24, a truck driver was killed.
According to police, 56 year old Charles Miller was hauling paper rolls from Tennessee to Mississippi in his 18 wheeler semi when he struck an overhead sign on the I 20/59 southbound at Arkadelphia Road, Birmingham.
Police say that it appears that Miller may have suddenly changed lanes due to reasons unknown which caused the 18 wheeler to strike the sign. The sign penetrated the cab of the semi and Miller was pronounced dead at the scene. An SUV and a small car were also involved in the incident with one person suffering minor injuries.
Miller who used to drive for the military before retiring was on his first trip for Jeff Chism LLC which is based in Columbus, Mississippi.
There have been many vehicle accidents at the same exit, including a fatality just as recently as August 2015 and another 18 wheeler crash in July 2015. In an attempt to trying and reduce the number of deadly crashes the Alabama Department of Transportation installed a concrete median barrier on 20/59 near the Arkadelphia Road exit last year.
